Iran Storms from Behind for GR Team Title at Cadet World C’ships

Iran captured World cadets Greco-Roman wrestling title after 20 years and repeated 1996 title in Tehran.

TBILISI (September 14) – Defending champion Aleksander KOMAROV (RUS) muscled his way past four challengers at 76kg on Wednesday for his second title at the Cadet Wrestling World Championships.

But, Komarov’s victory may have been the lone bright spot for Russia on the final day of Greco-Roman events at the championships as Iran stormed from behind with one gold medal winner and four bronze medal finalists for 68 points and first place in the team standings.

Asian champion Omid Hossein ARAMI (IRI) kicked off Iran’s come-from-behind effort with 2-1 victory over European champ Vladislav KUZKO (UKR) in the gold medal bout at 42kg.
What happened next, however, may have left Iranian coaches with confused emotions as its four wrestlers in the bronze medal bouts each had to settle for fifth place. Yet, each fifth place moved Iran closer to securing the team title.
In the 46kg bronze medal match, Nestor DELGADO RAMIREZ (MEX) captured Mexico’s first medal at the cadet world meet since 1980 with an 8-0 thumping of Asia champion Mohammad MEHRABI (IRI).
Meanwhile, Azerbaijan and Turkey also slipped past first-day leader Russia with five and four wrestlers each in Wednesday evening’s finals for 63 points at Tbilisi Sports Palace.
Azerbaijan received the second place trophy by virtue of the gold medal won by Fail ISKANDAROV (AZE) with a headlock for the fall at 3:19 over Asian cadet runner-up Elbek ERGASHEV (UZB) in the 46kg final.

Russia slumped into fourth place with 62 points despite Komarov’s steady effort at 76kg. Komarov outscored four opponents, 18-3, on his way to a repeat world title to go along with his two European cadet crowns. One of his wins was a 3-1 quarterfinal victory over Asia champion Hossein Jahanhakhsh FOROUZADEH (IRI).
In other championship finals, two-time Asia champion Akzhol MAKHMUDOV (KGZ) pancaked 2015 world bronze medalist Ulvi GANIZADEH (AZE) for a 5-3 lead midway through the first period of the 69kg final and made it stand for his first world title.

In the Greco-Roman finale at 85kg, Markus RAGGINGER (AUT) had to settle for his third straight silver medal in a major cadet event when he could not score in the final 50 seconds of a 2-1 loss to Alex SZOKE (HUN).

The championships continue Thursday with the first of two days of events in women’s wrestling.
